The Art of Prioritisation

More often than not, I get questions about how to start building healthy habits, how to ensure consistency in getting stuff done etc. I’d argue that the more important question to start with is – What is it that you need to stop doing?

If you have a long checklist of things you need to get done in a day, you are likely feeling overwhelmed and your attention scattered. The secret to regaining control lies in the art of prioritisation. Instead of adding more to an already full plate, take a step back and assess what truly deserves your time and energy. This requires you to prioritise and be mindful about where you direct your attention and energy.

Identify Energy Suckers

Start by identifying those energy suckers that lurk in the shadows, robbing you of your vitality. They come in various forms – from toxic relationships and time-wasting activities to negative thoughts that loop in your mind. Awareness is the first step to taking charge of your energy.

Example: If you find yourself spending hours on social media without any meaningful output, you’re likely in a rabbit hole of avoidance. Limit your screen time and regain hours of precious energy.

Say “NO” to Overcommitment

It's time to let go of the fear of missing out and the urge to please everyone around you. Learn to say “NO” to commitments that do not align with your goals or values. That allows you to create space for activities that truly matter and recharge you.

Example: If you've been saying yes to every social invitation and feeling resentful and exhausted, take a step back and realise you always have the choice to only attend the ones that bring you joy and fulfillment.

Embrace the Power of Delegation

Many energy suckers stem from the belief that we must handle everything ourselves. Delegate tasks that don't necessarily require your attention to others who are capable and willing. This not only lightens your workload but also empowers others to shine.

Example: Delegate household chores among family members or consider hiring help to handle tasks that drain your energy. If you have a perfectionist streak, choose to communicate your requests clearly and allow room for compromise.

Set Boundaries

Protect your energy by setting clear boundaries in your personal and professional life. Learn to say “NO” to requests or demands that encroach upon your wellbeing. Establishing boundaries is an act of self-love that preserves your energy for what truly matters.

Example: If you find yourself constantly answering work emails during your downtime, you are likely finding it hard to stay present with family, friends or the activity you are doing. Set specific hours for work-related communication.

Focus on Positive Relationships

Surround yourself with people who lift you up and inspire you. Minimise contact with those who consistently drain your energy with negativity or drama. Positive relationships infuse you with energy, while negative ones deplete it.

Example: If you notice that you have a tendency to complain about life, look in the mirror and ask yourself how you can be a better friend to yourself.

Embrace the Journey

Removing energy suckers is a liberating and empowering journey. As you bid farewell to those draining elements, you'll discover newfound clarity and focus. Embrace this process as a rejuvenating adventure towards reclaiming your zest for life.

Remember, it's okay to start small. Gradually implement these changes and celebrate each step forward. With time, you'll find that your energy and fulfillment levels soar, and you're better equipped to tackle challenges with a clear and focused mind.
